Kieran leads Senior Cowdy team to victory

THE final of the Senior Cowdy Cup was between Banbridge and Mourne Golf Clubs.

The first leg was played at Banbridge and team captain, Kieran Magennis, was hoping for a score up around the 20 mark. The performance of his team exceeded all his expectations.

Kenny Stvenson got a half point from Hugh Smyth.

Jonathan Burns beat Eamon Crawford and added three points.

Rory Madeley got the maximum four points from Kevin Murray.

Kieran Magennis did likewise against Eoghan Simmons.

Colin Wilton follow suit against Rory Whitson.

The amazing run continued when Paul Magennis got the maximum from Mark Feenan.

And it didn’t stop there. Trevor Woods halved with Stephen Doran and Neil Madeley beat Peter Murray.

When the scores were totalled, Banbridge led by 25 points to 7. What a result!

The second leg was played the following day over the world-renowned Royal County Down Links.

It was appropriate that Kenny Stevenson should hit the first tee shot. Kenny has played Senior Cowdy golf for close on 50 years and he is as enthusiastic as ever.

He was up against Reeve Whitson who has his eye on the professional game. Kenny did well to get a half point.

The play from the Banbridge players had to be seen to be believed.

Jonathan Burns beat Eamon Crawford 5 and 4 and took all four points.

Banbridge needed eight points and, when Trevor Woods beat Eoghan Simmons

6 and 4, the match was over.

At that stage, Neil Madeley was 2 up after 16 holes, Paul Magennis was 2 up after 13 holes and Colin Wilton was level after 12 holes.

This was a brilliant team performance from Banbridge and the Mourne men accepted defeat very sportingly.

Winning the Senior Cowdy Cup is an immense achievement and Kieran Magennis and his team should be proud of themselves
