THE Banbridge Junior Cowdy Cup team, captained by Tom Fee, are through to round two after defeating Ashfield Golf Club over two legs.

They won 3- 1 at home and they headed to Ashfield last Sunday in confident mood.

Ashfield, near Crossmaglen, are a very welcoming club and the matches were played in the best of spirits. It was very refreshing to watch.

Shane Crossan and John Convery wanted out first because they were keen to see how Chelsea fared in their final game in the Premiership.

Shane and John were three up after four holes against Damian Kilgallon and John Harte but they still had to go to the 18th to win two up. By the time that they got to the clubhouse, Chelsea had scored five times.

Jonathan Kerr and Frank Mooney were in top form and they beat Aidan Carragher and Martin Rooney 5 and 4.

Colm McGreevey and Adrian Barry had an up and down match against Paddy McKeown and Rodney Quinn. There never was more than a hole in it and Adrian won the 18th with a par and the match by one hole up.

John Fitzpatrick and Jim Lennon came up against Ashfield’s best pairing, Gareth McLoughlin and Tom Rushe. John and Jim had their chances but they did not take them. They lost by 3 and 1.

It was a magnificent result overall. Banbridge will now play either Dungannon or Loughall and that will a more difficult task. There are exciting times ahead, that’s for sure.
