Julia adds her name to list of stars on Elizabeth Long Trophy

Banbridge swimmer Julia Knox has been recognised as the top swimmer in Ulster in her age group.

Julia Knox was, on Saturday evening, presented with the Elizabeth Long Trophy for top performing 11 year old girl at the 2015 Ulster Age Groups Championships held earlier this year.

Julia had a fantastic meet with a haul of medals - seven gold and one silver, while she also achieved three National Junior Squad times in 200m fly, 200 IM and 400 IM.

On receiving the trophy, Julia adds her name to a prestigious list of past winners including Danielle Hill, NI Commonwealth Games swimmer in Glasgow 2014, and Sycerika McMahon, Irish Olympic swimmer in London 2012.

The awards ceremony took place as part of the annual Swim Ulster War Memorial Gala held at the Bangor Aurora.

The gala is a relay event and BASC entered nine relay teams in the event.

It includes a ceremony to commemorate all swimmers who fell in the 1914-1918 and 1939-1945 World Wars.

The Ceremony is conducted at the end of the heats and prior to the finals, with all swimmers and officials standing in silence around the poolside, to hear a reading of the poem ‘For the Fallen’ followed with ‘Reveille’ sounded by the bugler.

There will be a full report on the gala in next week’s LEADER.
