Joy for Roy as slow start can't stop a great round

The first Wedensday competition of the new season was played over a smaller track as drainage works were still being carried out.

Additionally, the bunkers were taken out of play so this made scoring all the easier.

Roy put together a fantastic round to come first with 45 points. That is all the more impressive with the knowledge that the 20 handicapper did it over 17 holes, having failed to score at the first!

In winning the competition, Roy was four points clear of Robert Campbell (15) and John Kelso (12). John, having completed the first nine in level par, faded in the back nine, unusually for him producing a couple of sevens and a ding. Robert, meanwhile, scored steadily for the first 13 holes and then turned the power on finishing with five consecutive pars.

Unfortunately, the heavy rain on Wednesday night led to the closure of the course on Thursday morning, thus depriving the Juvenile members of the club from the first part of their Easter programme of golf. The second competition in their programme is scheduled for Thursday 31st March.

Heavy rainfall was again responsible for calling off the Easter Weekend Stableford. Although the course was declared playable at start of play, only 24 players had teed off when the greens convenor had to make a decision to close the course.

The competition scheduled for the coming weekend is the four ball better ball stableford for the Mark McKinstry Memorial Cup. Now that course renovations have been completed, it is hoped to have qualifying competitions commencing next week.
