Iveagh win

IN the second of four games which they needed to win to bring league honours Iveagh Thistle travelled to Carryduff to play Saintfield in the George Best Under 12 League.

According to the form book they should collect all three points as lowly Saintfield have struggled this season but it was they who produced the first goal mouth action when from a well struck free kick just outside the box keeper Hunter had to scramble to make a good save.

This sparked Thistle into life and they went close to opening the scoring with a Moore lob going just wide quickly followed by a McCavitt shot which was well saved.

On 15 minutes Thistle thought they had opened their account when impressive Scott played the perfect pass into advancing Gallagher whose shot agonizingly went inches wide of the wrong side of the post.

The breakthrough came six minutes before half time when Woods cut in from the left and fired in a shot which was too hot to handle for the keeper and alert striker Carroll reacted quickest to prod the ball in. The second goal followed four minutes later with a great passing move, right back Russell played the ball in to McCavitt in midfield who rounded his man and fed winger Moore, who seeing the keeper off his line, drilled the ball over him from outside the box to give Thistle the two goal cushion.

Wilson and McMillan were introduced to the match at the start of the second half as Thistle continued to dominate with expressive free flowing football.

The third goal came via a short back pass from the Saintfield defender gifting striker Carroll with his second of the match five minutes into the half which killed the game off as a contest.  Several more chances were created but to Saintfield’s credit their defence stayed strong but a rash challenge with ten minutes remaining gave Thistle a penalty which was despatched by Gallagher.

In the closing moments Thistle produced another slick move resulting in goal number five when Wilson and McCavitt combined to play the ball into Cairns, whose clever pass put Russell in on goal, he coolly rounded the keeper before firing home.
