Hugh's death stuns golf club members

THE members of Banbridge Golf Club were saddened last Wednesday when they learned of the untimely death of their esteemed member, Hugh Rice.

Hugh had not been well for some time but his death still came as a major shock to everyone.

Hugh had been a member of the club for many years and he had held the highest offices. He was a long time member of council, served as vice-president and honorary secretary and then achieved his ambition in 2008 when he was elected Captain of the club.

He performed all his duties with great enthusiasm and he was always meticulous in everything he did.

Hugh was also a member of Banbridge Rotary Club and travelled all over the world with the club as a senator.

He was born in Belfast but lived in Dublin and became a banker by trade, working for the Allied Irish Bank before it became the First Trust.

Appointed manager in Enniskillen, it was this role which led him to come to Banbridge when he took over the town’s branch of the bank. He also worked in Belfast.

His funeral took place on Saturday morning at 11am at St Therese’s Church, Scarva Road, Banbridge.

Hugh was a very generous man with a wonderful sense of humour. The golf club will certainly be a poorer place for his passing.

The Captain, the office bearers, the council members and all the members of Banbridge Golf Club would like to express their sympathies to Hugh’s wife Aideen and to his children Jennifer, Oonagh and Trevor.

May he rest in peace.
