Hubert is the top man in Nicholson Cup

With first class weather making for perfect targets, high scores were expected. The shooters certainly didn’t disappoint, as Aaron Smyth began proceedings, posting a score of 99/297, after missing a full target on the first layout.

It was Smyth who led the line for much of the day, until top Irish international shooter Jim Doherty had his say. Doherty matched Smyth’s 297, but completed his 100 in what was a fantastic effort.

This looked to be the score of the day, however there were various shooters impressing among the field, including Mark Balfour, Hubert Gilmore and Rathfriland shooter Gary Laffin to name but three.

Shooting rolled on into the afternoon; Balfour let a full target slip, and Gary Laffin held his nerve to claim his first 100 score, finishing on a superb 298.

Gary was in fine form, and it showed through his score, one he’ll be milking for some time to come! However there were more twists to come as the day went on.

100 scores were definitely up for grabs, and another shooter to nab his first full century was Andrew Charleton. The Mourne junior blasted his way through the targets, to finish on an excellent 295.

The day arguably belonged to veteran shooter Hubert Gilmore though, holding his concentration to claim high gun, and the prestigious Fred Nicholson cup, after posting a fantastic 100/299.

Shooters are reminded of the upcoming 100-bird DTL to be held at Rathfriland Clay Pigeon club. This will be held on Easter Saturday, April 7, where the Robin Colgan cup will be up for grabs; all shooters are welcome to attend.
