Holidays leave Headmaster Gerry top of the class

When Gerry wins, he does it in style. He has shot a nett 59 before and he came very close to hitting that magical number once again.

He played very steady throughout his round and the obvious highlight was an eagle three at the 13th hole.

For his efforts, he also got a two shot cut on his handicap, coming down from 20 to 18.

Gerry’s score was one of the best rounds of the season so far.

It’s wonderful the relaxing effect that the school holidays have on headmasters.

There are still six weeks remaining, Gerry. You never know, you could win the “Golfer of The Year” title.

Colin Dodds (13 now 12) was runner-up with a nett 63. It is quite a while since Colin was so close to winning. He loves his golf and he deserves this bit of success.

Colin got off to a nice start with a birdie at the second hole and he also finished with a flourish, bagging a birdie two at the last hole.

Scott Nelson (5) won the low section (0 – 12) with a nett 64. He played the 18 holes in level par 69 and that must have pleased him.

Philip Mallon was runner-up in the low section with a nett 64. Does Philip ever have a poor round? I doubt it.

He had four birdies on his card and his only blemish was a nasty double bogey at the 17th.

He also got his handicap chopped, coming down from eight to seven.

John Convery (15 now 14) won the middle section (12 -17) with a nett 65. He relegated Bobby Geddis (13 now 12) into second place on countback.

Clifford Thompson (18 now 17) won the high section (18+) with yet another nett 65. Robin Jardine (23 now 22) was second in this section with a nett 66.

Jim Matthews (11) won the prize for best senior with a nett 67. The winners of the senior prizes seem to be getting younger every week. Are you sure that you are a senior, Jim?

Rory Leonard (scr) won the much sought-after best gross prize with a three under par 66. He had five birdies in his first nine. They came at holes two, three, seven, eight and nine.

He must have thought that the course record was a possibility after that but the birdie blitz dried up on the second nine holes.

He managed one at the 17th but that was his lot. It was still a brilliant round.

Matthew Elliott (12 now 11) was unfortunate. He shot a nett 65 and he still missed out on a prize.

Barry Tumilty and Matthew Mallon (5) both had nett 66s and Barry got his handicap down from five to four.

Trevor Mulholland (15 now 14), Mark McCoy (5) and John Redpath (14 now 13) came close with nett 67s.

But the hero of the hour was Gerry McBrien.
