Malaysia had gone ahead twice in the first half but Peter Caruth and a Shane O’Donoghue drag-flick made it 2-2 at the break.

Ireland could even have gone in leading at half-time through Banbridge’s Stevie Dowds. His fantastic first time shot, though, smacked off the crossbar and Malaysia scored twice after half-time to seal the win.

Next up for Bann lads Dowds, Eugene Magee and Drew Carlisle and their Ireland side are basement side China on Friday at 5pm before they finish their group campaign against Belgium on Sunday at the same time.
