HOCKEY: Bann quad off to South Africa

Four Bann men have a big trip ahead of them, named in the Ireland squad for a South African training camp.

Top-scorer Stevie Dowds, Bann skipper Eugene Magee, Bruce McCandless and Drew Carlisle are all set for the six-test trip from 21st January to 2nd February.

They’ll play six tests against South Africa, world number two side Netherlands and number four Belgium. The trip to prepare the side for the World League 2 in San Diego, starting on February 28th. The Banbridge lads will hope to keep their places in the squad for that tournament.

Other Ulster based players in the 22 man squad are Jonny Bell and james Lorimer (Lisnagarvey), Michael Robson (Annadale), Paul Gleghorne (Instonians) and Neal Glassey (Mossley).

Ireland coach Craig Fulton said: “This is a really important training and match phase for us in our preparations. Selection again was really tight and this camp will form the basis for the final selection for World League 2. We are all very excited and can’t wait to get training and playing together”.
