Hezlett crowned champions again

Last week Coleraine High School hosted their annual Primary School’s hockey at the astro-turf at the University of Ulster playing fields.

This year a total of nine local primary schools entered the event. Following a delay to allow the pitch to ‘thaw’, the tournament was played in two sections with the section winners and the runners-up progressing to the semi-final stages. Section A was won by the DH Christie Memorial School, who played runners up in section B, Portstewart Primary. Section B winners were Hezlett, who played their semi-final against a very enthusiastic side from Eden Primary School.

Both semis were end to end with all the teams having chances to score, but eventually the DH Christie and Hezlett secured their place in the final by virtue of one goal victories over their opponents.

The final between Hezlett and the Christie was another keenly contested affair. The ‘red and whites’ dominated the play having a number of shooting opportunities only to concede a late break–away goal in the final minutes of the game.

Organiser and Head of Physical Education at the High School, Mrs Nicky Smyth, was delighted with the skill and enthusiasm of all the girls who took part. She thanked all the travelling staff and parents for making last minute arrangements to enable them to attend the tournament in spite of the early morning inclement weather conditions and for their commitment to coaching and supporting their pupils. She also encouraged the girls to join their local hockey clubs to help develop their game and interest in the sport.
