Good victory but plenty of work still to be done

DROMORE travelled to Newtownards on a sunny Saturday morning struggling to put out 15 players due to sickness, injuries and unavailability of players.

Indeed Johnnie Creighton, Ashley Boyd, Ross Bingham and David Pyper all took to the pitch carrying injuries determined to ensure that Dromore were not disadvantaged by lack of numbers.

Once again the smaller Dromore team were met by a bigger pack but undaunted took the game to Ards right from the start. Ross Bingham, at number eight, led by example and had a storming game carrying the ball and off loading to his team and although he did not bag a try, he was involved in most of the good play the forwards did on the day.

Johnnie Rossbotham opened the score when he crashed over the line from a quick penalty move. Captain Ryan Hughes interplayed with Bingham to score next. Adam McDonald who switched to out half for this game kicked a ball behind the defence and the Dromore backline ran through with David Pyper lifting the loose ball and scoring under the posts.

Dromore at this point gave away a soft try to Ards from a simple back line move which should have been stopped if the backs had put in tackles on their opposition.

In the second half Adam Reaney settled nerves when he set off on an individual run from a switch move in the centre running through the opposition pack and backs to score a lovely try in the corner.

Rossbotham scored his second from another penalty move 10 metres out crashing over the line once again.

The best try of the day came from a stolen line out inside the Dromore 22metres area, Matty McMaster who had an impressive all round game stole the ball and gave a quick pass to Ryan Hughes who peeled away from the front of the line and ran the length of the pitch outstripping the Ards winger and showing a remarkable side step to beat the full back and covering defence to score under the posts.

Hard work on the day by Simon Henshaw, Scott Rodgers, Luke Fitzsimmons, Patrick Wright and Matty Davis assisted in the resulting score line of 7-36.

Dromore’s coaches commented on the commitment of the team in this result but again identified a number of areas to work on this week prior to the teams’ long awaited first home game next week.
