DROMORE played host to Academy RFC on Saturday last in a Qualifying League fixture.

The locals entered the match in fine form having demolished Lisburn in a Junior Cup fixture the previous week.

The young Dromore team started of in a hurry, and when Ryan Cobb kicked into the Academy 22, the pack secured possession at the next line out, and drove Roderick Dalton over for the opening try.

Another move, this time by the backs, saw Aaron Stewart dive over before Academy kicked an easy penalty to open their account.

The home side looked to attack at every opportunity and their endeavour was rewarded further when they notched up another two scores before the break to leave the score 22-3 in their favour.

Academy started the second half the stronger and managed to score in the corner before Dromore upped the tempo once again.

The pack produced a steady stream of tidy ball for captain Steenson to distribute to his backs, Mickey Allen showed his pace all afternoon and bagged himself a brace and birthday boy Gareth Fitzpatrick crossed the line to put Dromore out of sight.

The best try of the afternoon was kept to the last, fine drives in midfield by McDonald and wee Frazer set the backs away again, Kingan and Lunn combined to free Allen up the wing and when the Academy defence closed he timed his pass inside to Steenson perfectly, the livewire scrum half then scampered under the sticks to score, which delighted a large crowd at Barban Hill.

Club President Dennis Savage was happy after the match. He said, “What a great result for our lads, and the manner in which it was achieved was very pleasing.

“I know the team has been working very hard and the rewards are starting to show.”

Dromore head to CIYMS next sat for a Junior Cup tie, 2.30pm ko, all travelling support would be appreciated.
