It would have been quite a story if the two captains of the club, Robina McCandless and Declan Dooher , had met in the final, but it was not to be.

The final was a closely contested affair and it took a truly wonder shot from Megan Whan to decide the issue.

All four players were in good form and there was nothing between them for the first 16 holes.

Rory hit the tee shot at the dogleg 16th and the ball drifted to the right very close to the trees and in the rough.

Without batting an eyelid, young Megan pulled out an iron and sent the ball sailing over the pond towards the green. The ball landed four feet from the hole and sat there. It was an amazing shot and one that deserved to seal the match. Rory holed the putt and he and Megan went one up with two holes to play.

Teresa holed a tricky 5-footer to halve the 17th to take the game down the last.

Rory was just off the green on the right, which is not bad. Cathal was a wee bit too far left leaving Teresa a very tricky shot over the hump on the green. Teresa’s shot got to the top of the hump but rolled the wrong way. She was unlucky. Megan putted up close to the hole and the match was over.

It was a brilliant final and credit must go to all four players. But that shot from Megan at the 16th will live long in the memory. She and Rory were worthy champions.
