Warrenpoint too strong in the Cup for Banbridge

Banbridge played Warrenpoint last Wednesday in the second leg of their first round match in the Ronan Rafferty Cup.

The local team, captained by Mark Crory, were only one point adrift after the away leg (9.5 – 10.5). They were quietly confident that home advantage would seal victory.

It never was going to be easy against a team like Warrenpoint.

Jonathan Brush (7) lost the top game against Michael McGurk (4) and he got no points. Josh Crory (8) lost 2 and 1 against Morgan O’Hare (5) and he got half a point. This was not the start that was hoped for.

Callum Barnes (9) beat Michael Reavey (10) 1 up and he got 3 and a half points.

The Warrenpoint lead was now 5 points (13.5 – 18.5).

Luke Crory (12) got all 4 points when he beat Owen Durkin (17). Banbridge were now only one point behind (17.5 – 18.5). Their excitement was, however, short-lived.

Scott Nelson (10) had a horrendous start against Adam Loughran (14) but fought back brilliantly. It was all to no avail as he got only one point.

Warrenpoint had won an exciting tie by 3 points (18.5 – 21.5). We wish them every success in the remaining rounds.

The Banbridge boys must now concentrate on the Fred Daly Cup.
