Warrenpoint prove to be too strong in the Rossmore Cup

The Banbridge Rossmore Cup team, captained by Jim Matthews, were drawn to play Warrenpoint in round two of the competition.

Warrenpoint are always a very difficult team to beat and this match was no different.

The first leg was played last Monday. Banbridge had home advantage for the first leg but they failed to make full use of it.

The standard of the golf in all four games was exceptional. Par or better was the order of the day.

Hugh and Damian Dunne lost by one hole against Sean Burns and Paul Greenan. That was a major coup for Warrenpoint.

Joe Glass and Kenny Arlow levelled the match score when they beat Leo McCabe and John Fearon 3 and 2.

Cathal McNiff and Cecil Wilson managed to get a half against Mark Redman and Ian Mallon.

Cameron Morton unfortunately hurt his shoulder playing a shot at the fifth hole.

He struggled on but his partner, John Gallagher, was virtually on his own. What a game he played!

He took Michael Fitzpatrick and Darren McGivern to the 18th hole. But there was no happy ending. John and Cameron lost one down.

So the score at the halfway stage favoured Warrenpoint, two and a half points to one and a half.

The second leg was played at Warrenpoint last Sunday.

The Banbridge team gave it their best shot but all to no avail.

Cathal McNiff and Cecil Wilson frightened the ‘Point supporters when they won 3 and 2.

Cathal and Cecil were unbeaten in their four games in this campaign.

Mel Hylands and John Gallagher lost 2 and 1.

Joe Glass and Kenny Arlow lost 4 and 3.

Hugh and Damian Dunne lost 5 and 4.

This leg was lost 1-3 and the match overall was lost, 2.5 against 5.5.

Jim Matthews predicts that Warrenpoint will win the Rossmore Cup this season. He could be right.
