TRIPLE CROWN WIN FOR PHILIP

DROMORE’S Philip Patton was part of the Ulster team which won the Special Olympics Triple Crown golf event.

Hollystown Golf Club was the venue for the competition on Monday 10th and Tuesday 11th September.

Three teams from Special Olympics Great Britain, representing Wales, Scotland and England and five teams from Special Olympics Ireland representing Ulster, Munster, Leinster, Connaught and Eastern battled it out in very mixed weather conditions.

The weather conditions were difficult but this did not impact on the overall standard of play over the two days of competition Team Ulster claimed the Topaz Trophy prize and were overall winners of the competition.

It was a proud moment for Philip’s family as he won his division.

Philip has been playing the sport for six years with Birdies Golf Club, which he attends every Tuesday.

Also in the team was Leigh McKiverigan from Banbridge.

Speaking about Team Ulster’s winning performance Shaun Cassidy, Regional Director Special Olympics Ulster said “This is a fantastic achievement for Team Ulster. The athletes, their coaches and their Special Olympics clubs put a huge amount of time and energy into their training programme in advance of the competition and we are so proud of them for representing us so well at this event”.
