As usual, David McCabe had everything organised to perfection.

The first two rounds were played at Nuremore Golf Club near Carrickmacross in Co. Monaghan.

The third round was played at the spectacular course at Concra Wood near Castleblaney.

Both courses were extremely difficult but most enjoyable. The weather was perfect and that was a big bonus.

Going into the final round, there were five players in contention for the major prize.

Tom Fee had 68 points, Roy Rankin 64, Joe Whiteside 59, Albert Morrison 59 and Sydney Pepper 59.

Tom had a topsy-turvy round and both Roy and Joe caught him up. Standing on the 18th tee, Roy had 93 points; Tom and Joe both had 92.

Roy inexplicably hooked his tee shot into no-man’s land, lost the ball and got no points at the hole.

Tom got a bogey 5, two points and a 94 total.

Joe’s drive finished in the bunker on the right of the fairway from where he hit a magnificent 7 iron onto the front of the green.

Now the 18th green at Concra Wood is enormous but Joe was confident that he would get down in 3 putts and lift the cup.

His first putt got up onto the top tier and rolled to the back of the green. He didn’t hit his next putt hard enough and left it 7 feet short.

You know the rest. Joe missed his putt and, like Roy, finished with 93 points, one behind Tom.

That’s the game of golf for you. You just never know what is going to happen.
