Terence emerges as overall winner

Five golfers registered a seven under par tally of 35 points and so the overall weekly winner was only declared on the basis of the back seven countback.

As a result it was Terence King who emerged as the first overall winner in the competition. With a 14 handicap allowance Terry had a slow start on the front nine with five net pars. He made a par on the second and took a double bogey six at the third. With a par, par, birdie start he was quickly into his stride on the crucial back seven. Then came a pair of net pars. He concluded his successful day with a par on seventeenth and a birdie on the eighteenth. This tidy bout of scoring secured him 35 points and the top weekly prize.

A score of 31 gross points secured plus two handicapper David Sutton the gross award. With bogeys on holes two, three and eight on the opening seven David was not on top of his game. However on the credit side he registered crucial birdies on holes nine, eleven, thirteen and seventeen. An eagle three at the last was the decisive score. With pars on the rest of the holes he fought back to record this category win.

In the low section, catering for handicaps up to nine, there were some excellent scores recorded. In fact 20 golfers managed an under par score of 29 points or better.

The undisputed king was Timmy Cummins with a powerful effort of 35 points. He played both sevens in red figures. His opening seven comprised four pars to accompany birdies on holes one, two and nine. On the inward seven he had a bogey on the eleventh but later resolved matters with birdies on holes fifteen and eighteen. Pars on the other four holes brought him safely home.

Paul Dickson was second in the division with a tally of 32 points. Through the opening seven he dropped four shots on three holes and had only three of his seven handicap allowance left. Pars were made on the other four holes. On the inward seven he made birdies on holes twelve and eighteen. Four pars and a bogey on the fourteenth made up the rest of his return. A better back six earned him second spot.

Another tally of 32 points helped Kieran Magee to the third net prize. Off his allocated six handicap Kieran only slipped up with a double bogey on the second and bogeys on holes five and fourteen. Two birdies and nine pars constituted the rest of his round. Holes one and eighteen were the birdie holes.

The middle category caters for handicaps between ten and 16 inclusive. Over the duration of the weekly competition some 31 golfers carded under par scores.

Off his ten handicap allowance Tom Creaney dominated with a very tidy total of 34 points. Tom had a satisfactory opening seven containing pars at holes two, three and eight. On the back seven he was well to the fore with par figures at holes twelve, fourteen and fourteen. Birdies on holes seventeen and eighteen clinched him the top spot.

A score of 33 points shot Paul Rippon into second place. A better back seven score was required to get him across the winning line. Off his 12 handicap allowance he had nothing worse than a bogey on his card. Pars at six and eight were his early successes. On the back seven a birdie at the tenth and pars at holes twelve, fifteen, seventeen and eighteen were his marquee scores.

Playing off a similar handicap allocation Ian Harrison was third with a further total of 33 points. Par figures at holes one, two and five provided the early stimulus. On the way home pars at holes ten, twelve, fourteen and a birdie on the eighteenth were his consequential scores.

The high handicap section caters for golfers in the seventeen to 28 range. Some t32 golfers attained under par scores in this category. There were three individuals with scores of 35 points and they grabbed the net prizes on offer.

A better back six offering helped Dan Moore to the principal prize. Off his allocated 14 handicap Dan played a lot of solid golf. Birdies at holes six and seventeen were the obvious highlights of his good round. He consolidated his day with useful par figures on holes two, eleven, twelve and fourteen.

John McComb’s score of 35 points edged him into the runners-up spot. Off his 13 handicap allowance Johnny had just pars or bogeys on his winning card. Holes one, five and nine were his front seven pars. Meanwhile on the inward seven he hauled himself up the ladder with a quintet of pars at holes ten, eleven, twelve, fifteen and seventeen.

Finally the last net prize went to Gareth Murphy with the last card of 35 points. Playing off a 16 handicap allowance Gareth’s only off key hole was a double bogey at the fifteenth. Over the round par figures at holes eight, nine and ten were his formidable holes. Alongside a string of net pars he duly achieved this seven under par winning tally.
