Sherwin snatches victory from Ian’s grasp with a nett 60

It had rained quite heavily on Friday and that softened up the greens. Approach shots weren’t so much of a lottery.

The competition was the Ken Wylie Memorial and close to 200 members took part.

The calculated standard scratch score was nett 67 or 38 stableford points. No less than 31 players beat the CSS and a further 16 equalled it.

The battle for the winning spot couldn’t have been any closer.

Sherwin (16 now 14) and Ian Boyce (15 now 14) both went round in 76 gross. Both had 11 pars and seven bogeys but what made the difference was that Sherwin had an extra shot on his handicap.

Sherwin won with 45 points (nett 60) and Ian was runner-up with 43 points (nett 61). Two brilliant rounds and, a closely fought battle like the Wimbledon final between Djokovic and Federer, it was a pity there had to be a loser.

Stephen Teggart (18), Malcolm Russell (8) and Michael Beattie (15) came very close with 43 points each. There could be a section prize for each of them.

Ruari O’Neill (19), Gary McCormick (12) and William Malcolmson (5) all played brilliantly to finish with 42 points each.

Mark Hodgen (21), Dermot Magee (17), Alex Clarke (13) Tommy Gillespie (12), Luke Crory (12), Sydney Pepper (11) and John J. Lennon (12) all reached 41 points and they all should be proud of themselves.

Those who scored 40 points also deserve a mention. The magnificent seven are Joe Whiteside (16), Jim Russell (22), Cecil Wilson (15), Neil Clydesdale (6), Robin Bond (16), Luke Woods (3) and Damian Weir (5).

Irish International, Connor Doran (scr), took advantage of the perfect playing conditions to shoot the best gross score of the year so far.

Connor started his round four, four, three, three, three. That’s a par and four birdies. Out in 32 shots, back in 34 for a wonderful three under par gross 66. That score may not be beaten this season.
