Sherwin Curran wins the Matchplay Championship

The final of the Matchplay Championship was played last Wednesday between Sherwin Curran and Cameron Morton and what a thrilling contest it was!

Cameron got off to a flier and he was 4 up after 5 holes. It looked all over for Sherwin. But golf is a wonderful game and you never know what can happen.

1st- Cameron won it with a par; 2nd- Sherwin 3-putted. The hole was halved.

3rd- Cameron won it with a par to go 2 up; 4th- Sherwin 3-putted again and Cameron went 3 up.

5th- Cameron sank a putt from off the green. Sherwin 3-putted again and went 4 down. At this stage it looked very gloomy for Sherwin. Two of his shots were gone and he was 4 holes down.

6th- Cameron went out of bounds and Sherwin won the hole with a par; 7th- Halved in bogey 5’s. Cameron remains 3 up.

8th- Cameron went out of bounds left and Sherwin reduced the deficit to 2 down; 9th- Sherwin won it with a par so, at the halfway stage, Cameron was only 1 up.

10th- Sherwin, with a 4 nett 3, won the hole and they were level; 11th- It was Sherwin’s turn to go out of bounds. Cameron went back to 1 up.

12th- Sherwin won with a par 3. It was level pegging again.

13th- No change as the hole was halved in par.

14th- Sherwin had a 6 nett 5, won the hole and went 1 up. He was ahead for the first time in the match.

15th- It was halved with two excellent pars.

16th- Cameron had tree trouble and Sherwin won with a par. He was dormie 2 up.

17th- Cameron kept his hopes alive by winning the hole with a par.

18th- Cameron needed a win here but couldn’t do it. The hole was halved in 4’s and Sherwin was the winner, by 1 hole up.

It was a truly amazing match. Sherwin was never in front until the 14th hole. Cameron was very disappointed but he was full of praise for Sherwin’s tenacity.

It was a big moment for Sherwin, one that he will cherish for a long time.
