Senior lads on top form as cup campaigns charge on

It’s been a good week for Banbridge’s senior players, who first of all smashed their way past Massereene in the B&D third round before qualifying for the knockout stages of the Senior Cup on Sunday.

Two prestigious prizes on offer, the Banbridge boys performed when it mattered and are in fine form as the season takes off.

The Belfast and District Cup team, captained by Connor Doran, had a rather facile third round victory over Massereene last Saturday.

They had won the away leg by the amazing score of 6-1 so they only needed one and a half points from seven games to seal the deal.

Connor got the half point when he finished all square against Tiernan McLarnon.

Stephan Greenberg beat Dale Jackson five and four and Rory Leonard beat Philip Gibb five and four. Jim Carville beat Derek Turkington two and one.

That was it was all over. Luke Woods, Ken Stevenson and Rory Madeley were called in. All three were in a winning position when Massereene threw in the towel.

This team couldn’t play much better and the lads surely carried that over into the Senior Cup qualifying.

Senior Cup

The qualifying rounds of the Senior Cup were played last Sunday. Banbridge, along with 17 other clubs, made their way to Warrenpoint but due to heavy rain, the start was delayed for over an hour.

When play got under way, the Banbridge team, captained by Paul McAleavey, performed brilliantly.

Banbridge do not have a great record in this competition. In the last six years, they have failed to qualify twice and were beaten in round one four times. This season, the Bann boys are all hopeful that they can mount a serious challenge for the one trophy that they have never won.

The team have got off to a good start, qualifying in third place.

The four qualifiers were Warrenpoint on 288, Slieve Russell on 290, Banbridge on 293 and Tandragee on 294.

The individual scores that counted were Stephan Greenberg 72, Connor Doran 73, Rory Leonard 73 and Rory Madeley (on his debut) 75.

Colin Wilton was the other member of the team.

In the first round of matchplay, Banbridge will play Slieve Russell at Warrenpoint on Sunday 29 June.

So far, so good.
