Sam Blackley is the new Club Captain at Dunmurry GC

Sam Blackley was elected Captain of Dunmurry Golf Club at the recent 110th annual general meeting held in the clubhouse.

A member of Dunmurry Golf Club since the early 1980s, Sam is a senior manager in the Health Service. He has served on Council for 14 years in total and has previously been Match and Handicap Convenor, and Greens convenor, and captained Ulster Fourball, Ulster Cup, Junior Cup and Irish Mixed teams.

Speaking after his election Sam stated he was, “looking forward immensely to serving Dunmurry Golf Club as Captain, and recommended anyone considering joining the golf club to contact the secretary manager, Michael Stanford on 90610834 for further information or check out the web site – www.dunmurrygolfclub.com.”

Sam nominated Colin Riddel, who has served on council as membership convenor over the last few years, as his vice-captain.

On Saturday, January 24 Sam presided over his first official Club function – the annual men’s dinner which was well supported by members and their guests.

The Club also invited officials from the GUI and representatives from Lisburn, Hermitage and Dundalk Golf Club.

Speakers on the night were Tony Cassidy (Dunmurry), Peter Sinclair (GUI), Sam Blackley (Club Captain Dunmurry) and former Irish Rugby International Mick Quinn who entertained all with some fine tales.

Winter League: The Dunmurry Golf Club Winter League Match play is close to reaching the Knockout stages.

In the Morning Section B – Steve Davis and Mark Withington, Colin Hewitt, Steven Holdsworth, John Bennett and Tony Higginson, and Larry Stirling and Pat McKnight have already qualified for the Knockout stages.

In the Morning Section A have one more league game to play, however, the Father and Son combinations – Owen and Andrew Cochrane and William and Jack Redpath have already qualified.

The final two places will come from the following three pairs - Shane McIlvenny and Peter Quinn 28 points, Colin Riddell and Ian Halliday 26 points, and Harry Stewart and Walter Gibson 25 points.

The afternoon Section has still has two games to go with the top four pairs are as follows –

Top Section - Alan Young and Paddy Arthurs 31 points, Roger Doherty and Billy McAuley 28 points, Hugh Robinson and Jim Paul 24 points, John McAree and John McIlwaine junior 21 points.

Side Section – John Dickson and John Wilson Senior 26 points, Simon Rodgers and Paul McMeekin 24 points, John Wilson Junior and Gary Wilson 21 points, Harry Larkin and Maurice Ferguson 20 points
