R&A visit Royal Portrush

Representatives of the R&A and from Mackenzie & Ebert, international golf course architects, met Darren Clarke at Royal Portrush on Thursday to look at proposals for the course.

Former Open winner Clarke tweeted on Thursday morning he was on the course with the outgoing R&A Chief Executive Peter Dawson, his successor Martin Slumbers, and course designer Martin Ebert.

Clarke said: “Great morning @royalportrush walking with Peter Dawson, Martin Slumbers & Martin Ebert looking at proposed changes for @TheOpen @RandA.”

Royal Portrush is undergoing major changes - including the building of two new holes - as it prepares to host The Open Championship.

Portrush is back on the R&A’s rota for the tournament, having staged it once before in 1951, and the most likely year for its return is believed to be 2019.

The major renovation may be costing several million pounds but it is believed the benefit of hosting The Open will be worth over £70m to Northern Ireland.
