Mel’s team take the lead after first leg

Mel Hylands took his Rossmore Cup team to Downpatrick last Sunday to play the first leg of their first round match against the St. Patrick’s team.

He was hoping to maybe win two out of the four games played. That would not be easy.

Joe Glass and Kenny Arlow are two men in great form recently. They carried that form to Downpatrick, winning 3 and 2.

John McDowell and Cecil Wilson are very experienced players and they were not overawed by the occasion. They also won by 3 and 2.

That was the two games Mel wanted. Anything more than that would be a bonus.

John Crothers and Colin Kennedy were expected to do well but it just didn’t happen. They lost 5 and 4, which was a bit of a shock.

Fergie Cosgrove and John Doran got a half match and they weren’t happy..

They were 1 up after 16 holes. They both had shortish putts to win the 17th and they then lost the 18th. It was still a very valuable half point for the team.

Banbridge lead 2.5 –1.5 after the away leg and that is a great position.

Mel will be very confident that his team can complete the job over their home course next Sunday.
