The latest news from Banbridge Ladies Golf Club

The club competition held on Tuesday was the LGU Peugeot Coronation Foursomes, the winners of which now progress to the Area Finals later in the year.

The winners with 38 points were Helen Cocks and Sheelagh English. Runners up on the day were Juvenile members Megan and Melissa Whan, a pair of young ladies with a very bright future in golf, Megan and Melissa had 36 points.

There were only two twos scored both on the 15th hole, these were by eventual winners Helen and Sheelagh and Fionnuala Crossey and her partner Denise McBrien. The novice winner was Beverley Williamson.

On Wednesday May 16 a large number of ladies took to the course for the first Open of the year which was once again very generously sponsored by William and Audrey Porter of Porters Shop, Banbridge. The ladies very much look forward to this Open each year and this was evident by the ‘buzz’ around the clubhouse on Wednesday evening for the prize giving.

Due to the very difficult conditions at present the scoring was low however overall winner Diana Whan had a marvellous 39 points, three shots ahead of her nearest contender.

The ladies would like to extend their sincere thanks to William and Audrey and Porters of Banbridge for their extreme generosity in providing so many lovely prizes and for their continued support of Banbridge Ladies Golf Club which they have so generously supported now for a number of years.

Team News: The Cowdy Cup team began the defence of the Cowdy Cup against Spa on Sunday May 13. Conditions were very extremely difficult for both teams however Banbridge managed to come out ahead on the day however eight points was required from their return match at Spa which was held on Thursday May 17.

The team did manage to secure the necessary points and now progress to play either Killymoon or Kilkeel in the next round.

The Senior Foursomes team was in action on Saturday in the home leg of their match against Masserene. Having lost all three matches away at Masserene, odds are stacked against the local team but I know they will give their all to overturn the deficit.

On Sunday May 27 the Junior Cup team travel to Ballyclare to play the second leg of their first round match. Four matches to one up after the home leg the ladies will be hopeful of pulling off the win and progression to the second round.
