Ladies have the upper hand to win Horseshoe Trophy by two points

The Annual match between the Ladies and the Gentlemen of Banbridge Golf Club is always eagerly anticipated.

The Horseshoe Trophy is one of the oldest in the club and the winners have the honour of displaying it above the entrance to their locker room for the next twelve months.

The two President’s, John Parkes and Glennis Smyth, thought hard and long over their team selections and both came up with very strong teams.

The match was played last Friday and it was a thriller. There were 20 individual matches and this is how it unfolded.

Mildred Hodgett lost 5 and 4 to Brian Parkes.

Vivian Faulkner lost 1 down to Andy Murphy.

Lorna Poots beat Paul McAleavey 3 and 2.

Ada Lavery beat Paul Magennis 2 and 1.

Diana Whan beat Bert Wilson 4 and 3.

After 5 games, the Ladies led 3-2. The excitement was slowly rising.

Marlene Nelson lost 3 and 1 to Ian Boyce. Ann Magennis lost by 1 hole to Joe Glass. Melissa Whan beat Brian Mulholland 2 and 1.Fionulla Crossey lost 3 and 1 to Nigel Bryson.

Rita Downey beat Kieran Magennis 2 up.

After 10 games, it was all level, 5 wins each.

Robina McCandless beat Bertie Shaw 2 up. Joy Gowdy beat Gerry Blevins 1 up.

Denise Nelson lost by 1 hole to Declan Dooher.

Mary Longmore lost 2 and 1 to Felix Duffy.

Helen Cocks beat Sydney Pepper 3 and 1.

The Ladies led 8-7 after 15 games. It was all to play for, with only 5 games left.

Mary Joe Thompson halved with William McCandless.

Mary Dooher halved with John Parkes.

Denise McBrien lost 3 and 2 to Noel McSherry.

Could you believe it? The scores were level, 9 each, with only two games out on the course.

Marianne Nelson beat Gerry McBrien 4 and 3.

Jane Doyle beat her husband Donald 5 and 3.

After an amazing evening of golf, the Ladies had won the Horseshoe by 11 points to 9.

The men were silenced. They just could not believe what had happened. John Parkes sportingly accepted defeat as he handed over the Horseshoe to Glennis Smyth.

It was all great fun and that is what golf should be.
