Junior Cup team reach last eight

THE Banbridge Junior Cup team, captained by Rory Madeley, have reached the last eight of this prestigious GUI competition.

Their second round match against Lisburn was played last Friday at the neutral venue of Edenmore.

The vastly experienced Kieran Magennis was out at number one against Brian Hetherington. This was always going to be tight as both teams realised how important the first point was.

Everyone thought that Kieran was going to win at the 18th but Brian sank a putt from off the green to take the game to extra holes. Kieran won at the first tie hole.

Young Matthew Mallon was at number two against Stuart Campbell. Matthew has been in great form in recent days and he proved to be just too strong for Stuart. Matthew won 2 and 1.

Neil Madeley, the newly elected President of Banbridge Hockey Club, was at number three against Trevor Hewitt. Neil played a brilliant game as he romped to a 6 and 4 win.

William Malcolmson, another player in a rich vein of form, beat David Bolas 3 and 2.

The match was over and Josh Lockhart was called in. He was two down against Neil Law but it didn’t matter.

This was a decisive win for Banbridge and they will now play the winners of the match between Warrenpoint and Donaghadee. In their current form, Banbridge should fear no one.
