Jamie’s the king of the mixed with a duo of worthy queens

The first, on Friday 30 May, was won by Jane Doyle and Jamie Thompson.

The runners-up were Anne and Gerry Blevins.

Entertainment followed the golf and everyone enjoyed themselves. That’s the way it should be.

Last Sunday it was the turn of the Longmore Family Mixed Foursomes, which, this year, was raising money for the Ovarian Cancer Charity.

Jamie again came out of top but this time he was paired with Megan Whan. Together, they scored 44 points and won by 10 shots. Megan and Jamie have already been pencilled in for next season’s GUI Mixed Foursomes team.

Suzanne Murfitt and P.J. Johnston were second with 34 points.

Mary Longmore and her family deserve great credit for organising this competition for several years.

Sam Rutherford Cup

The Banbridge Sam Rutherford Cup team, captained by Shane McCrory, had an emphatic win over Down Royal in their first round match, which finished last Sunday.

The local team had finished eight holes down after the away leg. That is not as bad as it sounds and Shane was confident that his team could retrieve the situation at home.

He made four changes to his team. Out went Garreth Matthews, Neil Clydesdale, William Malcolmson and he opted not to play himself. In came Malcolm Russell, Adam McGregor, Scott Nelson and Paul McAleavey. It worked a treat.

Malcolm Russell and Adam McGregor won by five holes up.

Peter Hillen and Mark McCoy were six up after 17 holes.

Garreth Moody and Scott Nelson were eight up after 16 holes.

Jim Matthews and Paul McAleavey were two up after 15 holes.

That was it all over and the Down Royal captain conceded defeat. Banbridge will play either Ashfield or Omagh in round two. This team of Shane’s is looking good.
