Hugh Dunne wins the Mervyn Guy Memorial

Last Saturday, over 200 members of Banbridge Golf Club played in the Mervyn Guy Memorial tournament.

AJM Engineering once again generously sponsored the competition, thanks to the kind auspices of John Molloy.

Nine players had 39 points namely Adam McGregor (10), Kyle Buchanan (23), Gareth Matthews (12), Nigel Bryson (8), Matthew Mallon (6), Jim Lennon (16), Trevor Savage (26), Seamus Rooney (7) and Neville Kerr (11).

Seven players hit the magical 40 points target. They were John Fitzpatrick (17), Aidan Lavery (17), T Lyle Rea (21), John Parkes (13), Jonathan Shannon (5), Michael Beattie (16) and Alan Dale (12).

The two prizewinners in the middle section came from this group. John Parkes was first and Michael Beattie was second.

John Convery (17), Mel Hylands (12), Gareth Magee (7) and Morris Phillips (18) each scored 41 points and they were just one point short of a prize. Joe McConville (21 now 19) was alone on 43 points. On a lot of Saturdays, that would have been the top score of the day. Joe had the third best score this time and he won the high section.

Aaron Buchanan (21 now 19) was runner-up with 45 points. This is equivalent to a nett 60 and would have been a winning score on 11 occasions this season. But not this time.

That was because Hugh Dunne (14 now 11) came in with one of the best scores of the season, a mind-blowing 47 points or, to put it another way, a nett 58. Hugh went round in 72 gross, 3 over par, with 13 pars and a birdie at the short 8th hole. This was brilliant play.

The best gross prize was won by Connor Doran.
