Gareth bags an Open victory as his good form continues

The Thursday open last week was another tight contest at the top of the leaderboard with Gareth Matthews edging a win by just one point.

In third place was the Rossmore Cup captain, Mel Hylands (11). Having led his team to a stunning victory last weekend against Dungannon, Mel coasted round with 40 points on Thursday. It could have been more.

Colin McKinney(18) is displaying signs of a return to his very best form and 40 points was another step on the way. It was good enough for second place on countback.

The winner was an excellent young player who is now delivering on the big stage. Gareth Mathews(12) accumulated 41 points for victory and well done to him. If he keeps this form up, he’ll be targetting a single figure handicap before long.

Sam Rutherford Cup

Fresh from his Open victory, Gareth was involved in the Sam Rutherford Cup first leg fixture away to Down Royal Park last weekend.

The course is long and should suit the attacking style of the Banbridge team.

However, Gareth and his playing partner Neil Clydesdale finished two down to their opponents. Peter Hillen and Mark McCoy finished four down, Shane McCrory and Gareth Moody finished one down and finally William Malcolmson and Jim Mathews finished one down.

Overall, Banbridge are 8 holes down with the return leg at home to play. However, with this blend of experience and youth ,I fully expect Shane McCrory’s team to turn this one around.

Banbridge Notes

The draws for the Presidents Prize, the Mixed Foursomes and the Club Matchplay Championship are now on the notice board. Good luck to all competitors.

Also the sheet to select time-slots for Captains Day on 21 June 2014 is now on the board. Please place your name at your preferred time for Captain’s Day. The draw will be made next week.

Finally, over the past few weeks, the condition of the golf course has been improving every week. A program of scarifying and lowering the greens mowers had many members describing the greens as the best they have ever been at Banbridge. Congratulations to Stevie, Colin, Geordie, Shane and all of the green-keeping team. Your hard work is paying off.
