Davy wins despite horrific weather

This was well reflected in the scoring of the early morning golfers last Saturday. For the first time in Edenmore golfing memory, shortly after 11am the air horn had to be blown for the suspension of play due to an exceptionally severe hail storm which literally covered the greens in less than one minute. Play was resumed some minutes later.

Despite these horrible conditions, Davy Finlayson, one of the better golfers in the club, playing off a three handicap, had to endure the foulest of weather after teeing off about 8.45am, shot a magnificent winning gross score of 73.

Big Dave had double bogies on his first two holes and soon regained form with two pars followed by two birdies. His pars on the next three holes had him off the front nine in level par.

Despite another birdie on the thirteenth he finished two over for the back nine. Dave had a bogie free round last season and is building form for another great round soon.

The best overall score of the day was won by Michael Crowe with a superb stableford score of 44 points. Michael playing off 21 managed to score a very nice birdie on the fourteenth and topped it up with five nice pars.

His big secret was no dings on his card which kept the points rolling in. His success got him a nice three shot cut to his handicap.

The handicap section winning scores on the day were as follows.

Section one (0-13) handicap winner was Colin McKee with 34 points on a count back from Graham McIlroy also on 34 points, with Paul Murray coming third also beaten on count back with 34 points.

Colin won the section on count back and his round certainly was a round of two nines. His front nine had 13 points on the card at the turn but three birdies and three pars on the back made his 21 points on the back nine a winning score.

Section two, (14-18) handicap winner was Alan Weir with a brilliant 38 points. Alan playing off 17 got off to a poor start but soon recovered form to score 18 points on the front nine and an even better 20 points on the back nine.

Alan was two points clear of Keith Robinson and Peter Whiteside both returning 36 points with the former winning on count back.

Section three (19-22) handicap was won by the wily old campaigner Bob Scott playing off 22. Bob shot a great round, and returned 42 points for victory with a very tidy back nine of 22 points. Section four (23-28) was won by David Jones on 37 points. David also had a much better back nine scoring 21 points on the way home after 16 on the way out.
