Comfortable qualification for Cathal’s Carlingford Cup team

The qualifying round for the Carlingford Cup was played last Friday at Dundalk Golf Club and Banbridge made it through.

This very popular inter-club competition has a very unique format. The two best gross scores are added to the four best nett scores to give a team total. The top four teams qualify for the matchplay semi-finals.

Two good gross scores are the key to qualifying. Banbridge did very well in this element.

Shane Rooney and Callum Barnes both finished with 79s, two excellent scores round a very testing course like Dundalk.

Young Jamie Thompson had a tidy nett 71. Evergreen Seamus Rooney carded a praiseworthy nett 72.

Neil Comiskey was steadiness personified as he finished with a nett 73 while young Jonathan Brush held his game together nicely to score a nett 74.

Two scores were discarded, those of Peter Hillen and Gareth Moody.

The Banbridge team total of 450 was good enough to qualify in joint second place and Team Captain Cathal O’Neill, was delighted.

The draw for the semi-finals is Banbridge versus Kilkeel and Dundalk versus Dungannon.
