Brilliant climax to B&D

BANBRIDE met Donaghadee in the second round of the Belfast and District Cup. Donaghadee are a formidable side but Banbridge, under the captaincy of Paul Magee, are totally fearless.

The first leg was played away at Donaghadee. Paul was hoping for three points from the seven games. He got that and more.

Neil Madeley went out first against Donaghadee’s star player, plus two handicapper, Neil Boyd, and he lost 3 and 2.

Luke Woods was the right man to be playing number seven. He won a close match against Mark Rea by one hole up.

So, at the halfway stage, the teams were level, three and a half points each.

The second leg was played at Banbridge last Wednesday.

Paul Magee’s team needed four points for victory and he sent out his strongest players first. That tactic worked beautifully.

Connor Doran, five under par this time, beat John McBurney 3 and 1. Connor gave the spectators a thrill at the 10th hole. His superb four-iron flew straight and true and nestled down no more than four inches from the hole. It was so close to a hole in one.

Luke Woods was dormie four up in his game. Rory Madeley was all-square after 14 holes and Trevor Woods could have got a point if it was needed.

Banbridge will play Belvoir Park in round three. That should be worth watching.
