A birdie feast in Winter League

WITH an excess of 30 teams entered for the 2012/2013 Andrew Annett Winter League competition, the first week was of a very high standard.

All in the top five had two or more birdies on their card made easier by the shortened winter holes.

Michael Duke (12) out early in the morning birdied the first hole, the second hole and the sixth and pared the other nine holes; with a winter league playing handicap of eight this gave him a massive 35 points for first place.

Three players scored 32 points; in second place was Martin McConville (19) who had two birdies at the fourth and 12th. In third place was Andrew Holywood (15) with three birdies at the fifth, sixth and ninth. In fourth place was Francis Ward (7) who had five birdies on his card at the first, fourth, fifth, sixth and eighth.

David Bailie (23) with 31 points was fifth and John McConnell (14) also with 31 points was sixth.

The best gross on the day went to Colin McClenaghan (2) who completed the 12 holes in a four under par total of 44 shots. All will receive Paul Banford and Sons Butchers turkey vouchers.

Team scores will be published after the fourth week of competition.

On Sunday afternoon October 28 the gents committee played a challenge match against the juniors as selected by Junior Captain Russell McDonald.

Honorary Secretary Alan McClune was out first against Stuart Rossi.

The second and third matches saw Frank Ward play Anthony O’Hara and Honorary Treasurer Garry Adair play Cameron McDonald Gents Vice Captain Glenn Willis was paired against Junior Vice Captain Gareth Burns-Delaney and Past Captain Stephen Clarke against Keith Ebbage.

Harry Greer played Pete Rowntree (Junior Committee) and John Cahoon played Paul Banford. Frank Wallace played Lewis Patmore and out last was the Gents Captain Peter O’Hara who played Reece McKeown.

The youthful and talented gents committee with years of experience between them won the challenge match 8–1.

The only junior to put a point on the board for the juniors was Lewis Patmore.

After the match Gents Captain Peter O’Hara expressed his thanks to Russell McDonald for organising the team of juniors and commended all who competed in the first ‘Gents Committee’ versus ‘Juniors’ competition for a number of years.
