Colin Smylie’s team had lost the away leg by 3 matches to 1. This was a bit of a shock for the Banbridge team but they were determined to redeem the situation at home.

The Mayobridge men saw this as an opportunity to cause a major upset and they were equally determined.

The first game was the key. Dominic Quinn and James Bryson have been playing on the Junior Cowdy team for close to ten years and they have very rarely been beaten.

They started off really well in this match and were 2 up after 11 holes.

They then lost 4 of the remaining 7 holes to lose their game 2 and 1. Nobody could believe it, least of all Colin Smylie.

Colin kept faith in Gerry Blevins and Victor McNeill despite them having a nightmare in the first leg. His faith was rewarded as Gerry and Victor won 5 and 4.

The match score was now 2-4 in favour of Mayobridge.

Darren Barker and Brian Knox were 1 up after 17 holes and looking good for a win.

But the story was not so bright in game number four, that is if you were a Banbridge supporter.

Sean McGreevey and Robert Haire got off to the worst of starts and found themselves 4 down after 9 holes.

They found their form on the back nine but unfortunately ran out of holes. When they were dormie 3 down, the match was over. Mayobridge had reached the winning total of four and a half points.

What can we say? It’s congratulations to the Mayobridge team and commiserations to Banbridge.

It was refreshing to see the joy on the faces of the Mayobridge team. They had pulled off a major shock and good luck to them.

Scott Nelson wins the Open Stableford

There was more than the usual interest in the Open Stableford last Thursday. The Lady captain, Lorna Poots, put up some beautiful extra prizes.

Scott Nelson (5) made full use of his ability to hit the ball long and straight as he powered his way to 42 points and victory.

Colin McKinney (19) is not just as long but he is very accurate. Colin chipped and putted his way to 39 points and second place.

Terry Malcolmson (17) was also in good form. He was third, also with 39 points.

Keith Steenson (16), a former member of Banbridge, made a welcome return and he duly won the best gross prize with an excellent 72.

Thanks, Lorna, for your generosity. We know you had a wonderful Captain’s Day on Saturday and you deserve it.
