Banbridge’s Junior Cowdy team take a 3-1 lead to Portadown

The Banbridge Junior Cowdy Cup team, captained by Colin Smylie, played the first leg of their second round match against Portadown last Saturday evening.

The first leg was at Banbridge and Colin was looking for a 4-0 whitewash. That is always the aim but it is not often achieved.

Dermot Magee and Sean McGreevey were in impressive form and they beat Myles Conn and Shane McDonald 3 and 2.

Kieran Lennon and Kenny Jones were just too strong for Melvin Hull and Robert Hughes and they won by 7 and 5.

Gerry Blevins and Bertie Shaw drew on all their experience to beat Edgar McReynolds and Tom Smyth 3 and 2.

Portadown needed one point to keep the match alive. To achieve this aim, they put their strongest pair out last.

For a long spell, it looked as if John Poots and John Convery were going to win but they faltered over the closing stages of their match. Gary McKee and George Doherty got Portadown the point they wanted by winning 2 and 1.

Banbridge go to Portadown next Sunday for the second leg. They are 3-1 up in games and 11 holes up. It’s a good position but not decisive. There is still a lot of golf to be played.

- The fourth round of the Mid-Ulster Senior Alliance was played at Banbridge last Wednesday.

Brian Mulholland was once again above average and Banbridge’s best player. Brian had 37 points; John Parkes and Norman Doak both hit their target with 36 points each; John Poots missed the target by two points, scoring 34 points. The team score of 143 was good but not remarkable. It will lift Banbridge up the league table by a few places but they are not challenging the leaders.
