Banbridge through in Pierce Purcell

THE qualifying rounds of the Pierce Purcell Shield were staged at various venues last Sunday.

Dominic Quinn was once again captain of the Banbridge team and his preparations, as always, were meticulous.

The one thing that he could not control was the weather and it was simply awful. It was bitterly cold, very windy and soaking wet. The Down Royal course is difficult enough on a good day. Last Sunday it was dreadful.

The conditions were the same for everyone and Dominic’s men battled bravely to the end.

Stephen Orr and Barrie McCoy shot a 94. That sounds a lot but, on the day, it was a terrific score.

Philip McCourt and Paul McDonald did equally well with their 94.

Joe Glass and Alan Magowan battled through the wind and rain for an excellent 96.

Cecil Wilson and Jim Matthews weren’t happy with their score of 102 but it sealed qualification and everyone was happy.

The score from Garreth Moody and Jonathan Kerr wasn’t required.

The four qualifiers from Down Royal were the home side themselves, Lisburn, Banbridge and Silverwood.

Banbridge will play Lisburn in the first round of matchplay. We wish them well.
