Banbridge lose in the Sam Rutherford Cup

The second leg of the Sam Rutherford Cup final between Banbridge and Tandragee was played last Sunday.

The first leg had been played at Banbridge the previous Sunday and the score finished level. That was not what the Banbridge captain, Shane McCrory, wanted. He needed his team to be 5 or 6 holes up going to Tandragee. But, despite that setback, Shane and his team were determined to fight to the last.

Malcolm Russell and Mark McCoy were out first against Stephen Burns and Tony Graham. The Banbridge pair were 2 up after 17 holes. They lost the last to finish one up. This was a great start for Banbridge.

Shane Bell and Roy Sipson were out next against Geoff Gray and Emmet Nixon.

Shane and Roy played superb golf. They were 4 up after 16 holes, lost the 17th and won by 3 holes up.

After the first two games, Banbridge were 4 holes up. Nobody could believe it, especially the large contingent of home supporters.

Shane McCrory had to come onto the team himself as one of his panel had his handicap cut on Saturday.

Shane partnered Hugo Downey against Harry Thompson and Geoff Morehead.

Shane and Hugo were 4 down with 5 holes to play but fought back brilliantly to only lose by one hole.

Banbridge were still 3 holes up with one game remaining. Don’t read on if you do not like sad endings.

Neil Comiskey and Matthew Mallon played Philip Irwin and Gary Calvert. It was not a happy day for Neil and Matthew as they lost by 6 holes.

Tandragee had come back from the dead to win by 3 holes up and they deserve our heartiest congratulations.
