Back four holes bite but Mark holds on for a win

It was the Darren Weir Memorial Trophy, which is played in memory of one of the club’s finest players who died so tragically in the year 2000.

Close to 200 golfers took to the fairways and, at the end of the day, the best score came from Mark Hodgen, a 26 handicapper, with a stunning nett 61.

This was a brilliant score but Mark was in a position to shoot a record nett score. With six holes to play, Mark looked odds-on to score somewhere in the mid nett 50s. However, over the finishing stretch, Mark dropped no less than nine shots. No matter, he still was a worthy winner.

Young Connor Mulholland (6) was runner-up with a nett 62. What a round he had!

Connor was two under par gross after 14 holes and playing superb golf. Those troublesome final four holes had their way agains as he unfortunately bogeyed 15 and 16 but birdied 18 for a gross 68, nett 62.

Mel Hylands (12) won the low section with a nett 62. Bogeys at the final two holes spoiled his chance of winning the trophy.

Seamus Rooney (9) was runner up with a nett 63. He made a brilliant recovery after being four over par after seven holes.

Gary Hazley (13) won the middle section with a nett 65. Robert Clydesdale (16) took second place with a nett 68.

James Wilson (20) won the high section with a nett 63. Merton McDowell (20) continues his good run of form, taking the runner-up spot with a nett 65.

Connor Doran (scr) won the best gross prize with a near flawless 70.

Peter Hillen (12) was the best senior player with his nett 66.

There are always a number of near misses. Adam McGregor (10) had a nett 63, Victor McNeill (19) had a nett 65, Gordon Enderson (25) had a nett 66 while Paul Wylie (11), Gareth Magee (7) and Eugene Weir (6) all had nett 67s.

SUNDAY 18TH MAY

Ken Stevenson very seldom plays in the Sunday Sweep.

He decided last Sunday to use the competition as a little practice round, strolled round in level par and won it. What a star!

Kenny and Alex Clarke took all the prizes, first and second in the sweep and a half share of the twos pot.

1st- Ken Stevenson (4) Nett 32.

2nd- Alex Clarke (13) Nett 33.5.

MONDAY 19TH MAY

This was Colin McKinney’s fifth win in the sweeps this year.

John Poots, with seven wins, is the only player to have won more than Colin. It was a photo finish, with the three top players all having 32 points.

There was some consolation for Aaron and Bertie as they split the twos pot between themselves.

1st- Colin McKinney (17) 32 points.

2nd- Aaron Buchanan (19) 32 points.

3rd- Bertie Shaw (21) 32 points.
