Ashfield take the initiative in quarter-final cup clash

Team captain, Shane McCrory, was hoping to take a lead of at least double figures into the second leg. As it turned out, that proved to be more difficult than he thought.

Ashfield may be a small club but they have some fine players.

And they were cock-a-hoop after beating the great Mourne in the previous round.

Here’s what happened last Sunday:

Seamus Rooney and Roy Sipson lost by one hole.

That was a shock to the system.

Garreth Moody and Neil Comiskey won by two holes up.

Hugo Downey and Tom Mulholland won by five holes up.

Mark McCoy and Malcolm Russell won by one hole up.

That gives Banbridge a lead of seven holes up to take to Ashfield next Sunday.

It’s not a big lead by any means and the Ashfield men are the happiest after the first leg.

But golf is an unpredictable game and anything can happen. Don’t write off Shane’s team just yet.

Two members of Banbridge Golf Club deserve our congratulations after fine performances in Ulster Championships.

Colin Wilton, originally a Banbirdge player but now playing out of Castleblayney, played in the North of Ireland Amateur championship and his opening round of 70 over the world famous Dunluce course in the qualifying round was the best score of the day.

He shot a 69 on the Valley course and was one of the leading qualifiers.

Colin won his first round match against Ian Kettyle (Rathmore) by 6 and 5 but lost in round two against Stephen Coulter (Warrenpoint).

Coulter had defeated Co Sligo’s Gary McDermott 3 and 1.

Luke Woods played in the Ulster Boys Championship last week at Edenmore Golf Club.

He was in second place after the opening round but faded slightly after that.

His brave performance made us all feel so proud of him.
