Albert wins the Lions Cup in 
dramatic fashion

It was Lions Cup day at Banbridge Golf Club last Saturday and close to 200 golfers took to the fairways to enjoy the good weather and the fine conditions.

The level of scoring was superb. The calculated standard scratch was nett 67 or 38 stableford points.

This was equalled by seven players and beaten by 28. The seven on 38 points were Conor Campbell (6), Cameron Morton (12), Declan Dooher (16), Colin McKinney (16), William Horner (22), Ross McCandless (7) and Derek Crory (13).

Sam Wilkinson (24) topped the group on 39 points. Frank Mooney (21), Walter Smyth (15), Lee Tumilty (7), Mel Hylands (12), Wallace Henry (16), Dane Ward (12) and Jim Matthews (13) joined him.

Colin Dodds (13), Gavin Greer (18), David Thompson (13), Bobby Geddis (11), Gary Hazley (16), John Bell (5), Rory Leonard (scr), Matthew Mallon (6), Jonathan Ward (4), Joe Glass (15) and Eamon Galloway (17) finished on 40 points.

Rory Leonard won the best gross prize on four under par 65 - his best gross score returned this season with six birdies.

Bobby Geddis was top senior player on the day. Colin Dodds won the middle section and David Thompson was runner-up.

Patrick Magennis (9), Donald Doyle (23), Kieran Magennis (4) and Damian Weir (5) each had 41 points.

Patrick Magennis was second in the low section. Father Kieran went home empty-handed despite shooting level par.

Three players had 42 points.

Ruairi Gillen (10) won the low section. Paul Mark (17) won the high section and Robert Clydesdale (17) was runner-up.

The battle for the Lions Cup was fought out between Albert Morrison (19) and John Lennon (23).

After 15 holes, John had 38 points and Albert had 36. Albert parred the 16th while John bogeyed. John’s lead was cut to one point (40-39).

The 17th caught them both out. Albert got one point and John had a ding. They were level with one hole to play.

Now the 18th is a testing par 3 hole and they both parred it. Albert and John finished with 43 points each and Albert won on countback.
