Ulster team to victory

He has been captain of the Ulster senior team for the last three years. He was delighted to lead his team to victory in the inter-provincials last week at Lee Valley golf course in County Cork.

After tasting the bitterness of defeat on their home patch of Royal County Down 12 months ago, Ulster made amends on a stirring final day, defeating the defending champions, Munster, to capture the inter-provincial title.

- The Banbridge Sam Rutherford Cup team, captained by Shane McCrory, went to Ashfield last Sunday for the second leg of their quarterfinal match.

After the first leg, Banbridge held a lead of seven holes up. This is far from decisive in the greensomes matchplay format.

Neil Comiskey and Conor Mulholland went out first and they lost by four holes. The Banbridge lead was cut to 3 holes.

Tom Mulholland and Mark McCoy were sitting pretty at dormie two holes up but they lost the last two holes to finish all square.

Ryan Simpson and Malcolm Russell lost in the third game by four holes and, lo and behold, Ashfield were in the lead by one hole up.

Everything depended on Roy Sipson and Garreth Moody in game four. These are two dogged competitors, that’s for sure. They played brilliant golf and made very few mistakes. That’s the key to success in greensomes. Roy and Garreth won 5 up and Banbridge won the tie by four holes up.

This was a super win for Shane McCrory’s team and they cannot wait for the semi-final. It’s all getting very exciting.
