Gilford’s famous five land Mid-Ulster titles

IT was business as usual for Gilford Boxing Club as their five entries embarked upon the Mid-Ulster Championships at the Royal British Legion, Gilford.

Marcus McKeown, Nathan Young, Connor Campbell, Conor Vint and Zach Crossett represented the hosting club and together notched up another five titles with spectacular highlights from Vint and Crossett.

The famous five will now proceed to compete at the Ulster finals on March 9.

With a display of power punching and persisent aggression, Conor Vint (Gilford) was once again back in top form.

A second round stoppage victory against Shane McDonagh (Clonoe) in semi final meant he faced twice crowned Irish champion, Martin Maughan (Cavan) in the final.

It was one way action from the red corner as Vint impressed crushing uppercuts and crunching body blows to the Cavan boxer.

Maughan held on by the skin of his teeth to hear the final bell after receiving standing eight counts in rounds two and three whilst Vint claimed the Mid-Ulster title for the fourth consecutive year.

Zach Crossett (Gilford) took on Jordan Liggett (Ederney). Zach’s aggressive come forward style, with good upper body movement was too much for Liggett.

Crossett was first to land with a stiff jab to face. Liggett countered with a flurry of punches of his own but Zach took the round by a slight margin.

Round two and Zach kept up his relentless pressure, landing with stinging fast punches to take the round.

In the third and final round Liggett struggled to cope with the fast pace Crossett had set as he endured the evidence of the gilford boxers fitness with Zach landing crisp punches at will.

Crossett sealed the victory with a unanimous decision on the score cards over the previous years Irish finalist.
