Former Academy skipper becomes the latest in long line of Bann internationals

The former Banbridge Academy captain was one of six Banbridge players named in the 27 man squad to face Argentina in three tests last week and he got his cap in the 2-2 draw at Pembroke on Saturday.

“It was a great experience,” he told the ‘LEADER.’

“To get my debut against the sixth best team in the world was really special. It was a surreal day and it was just great to play alongside some of the Ireland lads who have so much experience.

“It’s a step up from club hockey but playing with so many internationals at Banbridge definitely made it less daunting.

“I was over the moon to get called up and then to play on Saturday was great.”

The Queen’s student even refused to rule out his chances of making it on the plane to Rio, should Ireland’s ticket be confirmed this weekend.

He said: “It will be difficult (to make the final squad) but I’ll keep working hard and anything can happen.”

Matthew Bell, Drew Carlisle, Eugene Magee, Owen Magee, and Bruce McCandless were the other Bann players in the Ireland squad.
