They’ve had a long wait for their first league victory of the season but it arrived on Saturday afternoon when they overcame near neighbours Moira Albion 2-0 thanks to Stuart Wilson’s first goal for the senior side and a late clincher from top-scorer Steven Leckey.

Cloney had the better of the first period but they just could not make their chances count. They were unlucky not to take the lead with Karl Cullen striking the bar and Damien Higgins firing over from only two yards out.

Not to be deterred, Cloney continued to create in the second period. However, their wastefulness could well have come back to haunt them, as Moira always dangerous on the break struck the post with the rebound effort going straight at goalkeeper Derek Curran.

Cloney sparked into life and Stuart Wilson opened his account for the first team in style. The young winger picked the ball up and smashed home into the top corner from 25 yards out.

Cloney got a second through top-scorer Steven Leckey when he forced home a corner from Cullen. Leckey near added a third with a superb overhead kick for a great save, while Jason Stokes was also foiled by another save after a great passing move.

Donacloney would like to thank Pat and Simon Hylands for their kind matchball sponsorship.
