U18s put in a good performance

DROMORE travelled to Cookstown on saturday and came away from the venue with maximum points after a great team performance.

The locals shuffled the team around before kick off due to withdrawals and also to freshen things up and from the whistle it was apparent that it was going to work.

Topley moved to centre back, Neill to right wing and Green went up front along side McKinstry. The Amateurs took the game to their hosts and were unlucky not to break the deadlock in the first few minutes when Green flashed the ball across the face of goal but McKinstry’s effort went narrowly wide.

The same two players combined again and the keeper made a decent save to keep the teams level. Dromore were well in control and the muscle of Walker and Nicholson in midfield along with Neill and Campbell’s pace on the wings were causing the hosts problems.

The back line of Martin , Topley, Scappaticci and Mcmurtry always looked solid and with so much dominance it seemed inevitable the locals would take the lead but as halftime approached McKinstry failed to finish when well placed so the half ended equal.

As the second have proceedings got under way Dromore continued to press and it was the Cookstown keeper who was the busiest man on the field, making fine saves from Green and Neill. Dromore then got the deserved break through when Neill played McKinstry in and he finished superbly from the edge of the box to make it 1-0.

A Cookstown defender played a long ball forward and both their strikers appeared to be five yards offside, the referee waved play on and as the Dromore back line tried in vain to clear it came off one of the centre half,s to level the score.

With eight minutes remaining, captain Josh Walker smashed the ball home to regain the lead. Dromore continued to press and as the clock run down the Amateurs proved worthy winners and secured the result which keeps them in touch with the league leaders.
