If Slane beat their fellow promotion hopefuls St Marys on Saturday, they’ll be in with a shout but they still need a favour elsewhere.

Had St Mary’s beaten the Tigers last night, Slane’s hopes would have been all but over. They’re still in with a shout and on Saturday, Slane must beat St Marys and hope for a result for Bourneview YM at promotion chasing Valley Rangers.

Should that happen, Slane will be an Intermediate A side next season.

Boss David Johnstone is delighted even to be in such a position at this late stage of the season.

He said: “The players deserve great credit. I think we had dropped nine more points than promotion favourites Valley Rangers when I took over so to claw that back is certainly an incredible achievement and shows just how good our run has been.

“In 15 league games, we have won 12, drawn one and lost two. Whatever happens in the last game will be a good experience for the younger players and it will be an interesting game. Hopefully we get a good turnout of the BAWA to help support the team.”

Even if results don’t go their way on Saturday, their hopes of going up won’t be 100% over as Slane have already lodged an official complaint in relation to their defeat to Oxford Sunnyside. The complaint centres around the possibility that the opponents played an ineligible player in that game and it’s now in the hands of the MUFL and the IFA.

“I try to stick to matters on the field but I have been informed that the committee is absolutely taking this matter further,” said Johnstone.

“I know it is not a step that the club is taking lightly but they have not been satisfied with the information received back from either the Mid Ulster League and the IFA to the questions put so far.

“There may well be a simple explanation to the conflicting information we have received especially in the light of other evidence obtained and the club is entitled to a proper explanation but it certainly would have a huge impact on the promotion race.”

To avoid an end of season headache, Moneyslane will be looking to seal their promotion spot on the pitch. In order to do that, they’ll all be Tigers supporters tomorrow evening.
