That's more like it says Coleraine boss

A week is certainly a long time in football, but for Coleraine boss Oran Kearney Saturday's game with Crusaders couldn't come quick enough.

Many managers could have saw a game with the league champions far enough after coming off the back of a 4-0 defeat the previous week.

Kearney though had challenged his side to show what they are really made of and put their Dungannon disappointment behind them.

And they did. A morale boosting performance and result will have boosted confidence and Kearney is hoping it’s a sign of more to come.

“I asked for a response after last week and we got it today,” he told Times Sport.

“That’s all you can do. The good thing about football is there’s a quick turnaround of games. Ideally we would have wanted a game on Tuesday night to be honest as it made for a long seven days.

“It’s been a very Jekyll and Hyde start for us.

“We’ve played really well at Linfield and drew and gone really well today and drew again, but last Saturday was just so poor.

“It’s not about the standard of opposition or anything else.

“We have to work towards getting that consistency of performance every game, we’ve had it in two of our three games, but we have to go into Friday night’s game with Glentoran and aim for that same standard of performance again.”

The start certainly wasn’t in the script though as the Bannsiders found themselves a goal down with just 75 seconds on the clock.

Kearney though praised his side for the character they showed to bounce back.

“There was every right for the players to down tools today after that start, and every right for them to feel sorry for themselves after the week they’ve had,” he said.

“We conceded a quick goal last week and another one today, the most natural thing would have been for them to lie down.

“But to be fair to the lads the response we got was brilliant.

“We had enough chances in the first half to go in at 1-1, but it took right until the 45th minute until the goal came.

“David has scored a few in the past and he strikes a really good ball. It is a while since he has done it, he probably should be doing it more regularly, but he picked his moment today and it was nice to see it go in.”

Coleraine could have won it in the end as James McLaughlin and Darren McCauley both had late chances to score.

“Both sides had chances to win it but I think overall a draw was probably fair enough,” said Kearney.

“James’s final touch just as he gets in on goal just lets him down.

“It was one of those were the chance probably comes too early for him, if he had been on the pitch another five or six minutes and had a a few more runs he would have been more up to speed.

“Darren’s effort would have been a contender for goal of the season but to be fair it’s a great save from Sean.”
