Swifts knock a rugby score past Lurgan United Reserves

Lurgan United Reserves had went down thirteen to Rangers’ third string at Cheney Park earlier in the season but on a very small pitch Rangers believed they would have been up against it in the compact surroundings.

The opening goal arrived on 12 minutes through John McCahon from the penalty spot to the relief off the Rangers contingent who had witnessed their striking option miss a host of chances in the opening period of the game.

The difference in the two sides came down to Banbridge Rangers ball work with neat one twos opening up Lurgan time and again with striker Neil Wilson four times in the first half and John McCahon adding two more for the hattrick and leave Rangers with a 7-0 advantage heading into the break.

After the interval Lurgan United scored an OG from a 30 yard volley to make it 8-0 followed by a well taken finish by winger Aaron Chambers. Neil Wilson added a fifth goal for himself and with the score moving into double figures the proflific hitman moved into nets in place of Stuart Cairns who took his place up front.

Cairns soon found the net but was adjudged offside but made amends firing the ball into the roof off the net either side of an Andy McLarty brace to move the Gers onto thirteen.

John McCahon added a fourth goal for himself followed by a strike from the edge of the area by substitute Trevor McMinn to make it 15 for the day. The Lurgan side added another own goal before left back Ferry opened his club account with a well taken finish on seventy five minutes.

In the closing stages Robin Butler was denied by the crossbar before being able to move onto five goals of the season blasting home the eighteenth goal of the day from inside the box.

Banbridge Rangers Swifts make the trip to local rivals Rathfriland Thirds on Saturday knowing that a win will keep their title ambitions on track.
